Happy Critters Make Great Beef!

Today more folks are concerned about the source of their food and the processing involved in bringing it to the table.  At Big Valley Ranch, our focus is to provide small-scale, locally raised quality beef.

In February we purchase our steers from Howard Asmussen of the Double R Ranch just 40 miles from here as the crow flies.  They weigh about 600 pounds.  We feed high quality local alfalfa hay until June when the cattle are moved to our ranch pastures for the summer.  In November we move them back to the winter field where they are fed a mixture of grains and local alfalfa until butchering time in early May when the steers typically weigh between 1200 and 1400 pounds.  I give my steers a bloat block whenever I change feed, but no steroids, shots or chemical additives.
